Learning Support
Learning Support is one of the Student Support Services available at Kallangur State School.  Some students experience learning difficulties and need assistance to fully access the curriculum.  At Kallangur State School we provide learning support to students across all year levels.

Students with learning difficulties require an inclusive and supportive environment.  Teachers and support staff work cooperatively to provide strategies and skills that enable students with learning difficulties to engage in their classroom programs.  All students requiring learning support are referred by teachers or parents through the Student Support Services Committee.
Learning Support Staff
Learning Support teachers are known as Support Teachers: Learning Difficulties (ST:LDs).  We have two ST:LDs at Kallangur State School.  Annette Young is the ST:LD for Years 4 - 7.   She coordinates the Learning Support program. Annette Nugent is the ST:LD for Prep - 3.   She is also our Reading Recovery Teacher.

The ST:LDs assist classroom teachers to provide modified programs that facilitate meaningful learning experiences for students with learning difficulties. ST:LDs operate within a flexible framework of support options.  Learning support may take place within classrooms, with small groups or with one-on-one interactions.
Appraisement
It is important to effectively manage the process of identifying and supporting our students with learning difficulties.   Education Queensland has developed a system to administer learning support programs.  This is known as the Appraisement process and is coordinated by ST:LDs.  Appraisement includes:

·          identifying students with learning difficulties
·          recommending a level of learning support (Program Type) for each student
·          developing Individual Support Plans for students in collaboration with classroom teachers
·          designing and implementing appropriate modifications for students’ classroom programs
·          reviewing Program Types every two years.
Role of Support Teachers: Learning Difficulties (ST:LDs)
ST:LDs are involved with many aspects of managing and supporting the programs for students with learning difficulties. They undertake a variety of roles within the school.  These roles include:

·          participation in the Student Support Services Committee
·          managing the Appraisement process within the school
·          collaborating with classroom teachers to develop and implement effective classroom modifications for learning support students
·          consultation with parents
·          liaison with administrators, Advisory Visiting Teachers (AVTs), Guidance Officer, School Chaplain and Speech-Language Pathologists, etc
·          providing professional development for staff, teacher aides and volunteers involved with students with learning difficulties
·          managing funds allocated for learning difficulties support
·          consultation with personnel from other relevant agencies.
