Kallangur has had instrumental music as an extra-curricular subject for thirtyyears. There are two facets to instrumental music, strings and multi (brass, woodwind and percussion).
The following instruments are taught at Kallangur State School: clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, baritone, tuba, percussion (both tuned and non-tuned: drums, xylophone), and bass guitar.
With the exception of the bass guitar (you need to provide your own), the school owns these instruments and lends them out to beginners for the first year of tuition. After that, you are expected to buy your own. The larger instruments (euphonium, baritone, tuba, bass clarinet and tenor saxophone) are loaned for a longer period as they are more expensive.
Students eligible for the program are Years 4 to 6. The following criteria are used to select students: musical aptitude, good homework and attendance track record, and behaviour. Learning an instrument is not easy, and requires regular home practice in order to progress.
